Dr. Raksha Takoordeen Inc.

MBChB (Natal), FC Paed (SA)

Dr Raksha Takoordeen is a well-known and highly respected paediatrician based at Mediclinic Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, known as the “city of flowers” for its azaleas and roses.

The practice is a warm and friendly environment, centred around providing comprehensive, holistic healthcare to paediatric patients, from newborn to teenagers. It focuses, not only on the patient but the entire family to create a nurturing environment for positive growth and development for every child traversing its doors, with the hope that each child will be able to achieve their dreams and realise their full potential without the burden of medical illnesses holding them back.

“After miraculously surviving a congenital tumour, medicine has always been my passion. There was always a desire to help those in need, hence a career in healthcare and specifically, paediatrics was cemented from my very early years.”

Her private practice offers a broad dimension to healthcare, always providing a continuity of care from the onset of treatment to completion and long-term follow up thereafter. It allows a more personal approach to the patient, where a bond is created on several interpersonal levels. Due to fewer resource limitations, it allows healthcare to be practiced with near first-world advances, providing the best possible care for the patient.

Practicing medicine has such a deep, raw human element to it. She sees her patients in their most vulnerable state, and it allows her to connect at the most fundamental level, centred around kindness and compassion.

Dr Takoordeen always had a special interest in paediatrics but more specifically in neonatal care and prematurity – these are babies born earlier than 37th weeks. Dr Takoordeen is actively involved with the management of many challenging cases of premature babies (preemies). One of many such cases is one of the smallest surviving preemies in Pietermaritzburg and several micro preemies in her private practice. She has a decade worth of experience at specializing in one of the most intensive and delicate practices in medicine both in physical and emotional health.

Dr Takoordeen’s ample experience stems from a deep and caring passion, together with continuous professional development in the field of neonatology and prematurity. Aside from a special interest in neonatology and prematurity, as a learned practitioner of medicine, Dr Takoordeen has also taken an interest in paediatric cardiology, allergology and ADHD.

She completed her undergraduate training in 2002 at the University of Natal, Durban and served her internship at Tygerberg Hospital, Western Cape in 2003 and community service in deep rural Tugela Ferry in KZN in 2004. She joined the department of Paediatrics in 2005 and completed her Fellowship in Paediatrics in 2009 at UKZN. Dr Takoordeen has been in the private sector since 2010 in the City of Pietermaritzburg. Her current practice was established and in operation since July 2017.

Dr Takoordeen has also affiliated herself, as part of her community outreach, to the Joseph Baines Children’s Home of the Salvation Army. A foundation created with the most inspirational and sincere motives and ideals; she finds these ideals resonating with her own. This has resulted in many collaborations and both Dr Takoordeen and the foundation have worked very closely in providing consultation to over 80 children of the home for no remuneration, and furthermore assists in arranging transfers to the appropriate state facilities as more complicated healthcare is required.

In Addition to the Joseph Baines Children's Home, she also assists other children's homes in and around Pietermaritzburg and the Pietermaritzburg Community Chest by participating and contributing in various roles, especially in times of dire need.
